The 1966 Climens has an attractive bouquet with scents of orange rind, custard tart and ambrosia, though it does not have near the complexity of the 1967. The palate is medium-bodied with good weight and fatness, lower in acidity than you might expect with jabs of stem ginger towards the finish, hints of lime cordial on the aftertaste. Not a top-rank Climens, but it acquits itself well. Tasted at the Château Climens vertical in London in 2009.

Bright orange. Sweet and rich. Drying on the end. Hint of raisins – as well there might be since this vintage was dried rather than botrytised. Tangy. Interesting and still lively but not at all like most classic vintages. Long and fresh but drying on the palate. (JR)

Château Climens is one of Sauternes-Barsac’s leading producers of sweet wine. Classified as a Premier Cru or First Growth in 1855 it sits alongside just 10 other Premier Cru estates in Sauternes, only bettered by Ch. d’Yquem, which was granted its own elite classification of Premier Cru Supérieur.
