Marked by cedar and menthol aromas, Ferraton's 2009 Ermitage Les Dionnières delivers savory, earthy and meaty notes on the palate. It's full-bodied, admirably concentrated and reasonably long on the finish, but it seems to be evolving quickly.

Deep ruby. Potent aromas of dark berries and cherry, with a strong mineral element and notes of licorice and black tea. In a brooding style, with intense, mineral-accented bitter cherry and blackberry flavors. Dusty tannins add grip to the firm, spicy, very persistent finish. I suspect that a few more years of bottle age will help this wine to stretch out.

Glass-staining ruby. Exotic, mineral-driven aromas of black cherry, blackcurrant, apricot, licorice and violet, with a touch of cracked pepper. Sweet and juicy but tight, offering flavors of dark berry compote, peppery spices and black olive. The finish has excellent length and chewy tannins that avoid coming off as dry.
