The 2001 Barolo Nei Cannubi has held up reasonably well, but it is flattened by French oak. There is plenty of depth in the fruit, but the nuance will never emerge from underneath the oak. A round, sweet finish compensates to some degree.

The 2001 Barolo Nei Cannubi has held up reasonably well, but it is flattened by French oak. There is plenty of depth in the fruit, but the nuance will never emerge from underneath the oak. A round, sweet finish compensates to some degree. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. Einaudi’s 2001s were made during a time of transition at the estate. All things considered, the wines have held up well. I have little doubt today’s Baroli will eclipse the wines made during this period. Importer: Empson, USA, Alexandria, VA; tel. (703) 684-0900

Ruby with some brick – doesn’t look that much older than the 2008s. Sweet, slightly decadent red fruit. Some very ripe fruit aroma. Still quite firm and chewy. Not a lot in the middle. Seems to have the tomato note too – ripeness and slight underripeness side by side. (JH)

Einaudi's 2001 Barolo Nei Cannubi shows the unmistakable pedigree of Cannubi in its deep, layered personality, revealing aromas of spices, flowers and vanilla, followed by plenty of rich, round red fruit, macerated cherry and toasted oak flavors. Aged 6 months in barriques, of which 40% are new, followed by 12 months casks.
