The 1983 Le Pergole Torte comes across as slightly confused and disjointed. This is not remembered as an easy vintage. The bouquet shows a lack of fruit and instead exhibits spicy white pepper and chalky powder with iron and rust-like aromas at the back. The mouthfeel is eroded and chiseled away, with raw sensations and gritty tannins left in place. The wine's appearance is less precise and luminous than the others. There is a harsh quality to this vintage, but the 1983 edition is not without character and interesting imperfection. In fact, Martino Manetti says something about this wine reminds him of his father, Sergio.

The 1983 Le Pergole Torte (double magnum) is another wine that has reached its maturity. A bit volatile and oxidized, the 1983 is fully tertiary and quite soft on the palate. As always, the 1983 has the characteristic veins of Sangiovese that give freshness. Of the early Pergole Tortes, the 1983 is the most rustic and evolved.
