Scented and full of fruit. Quite rich on the front palate and then pretty drying. Needs lots of time and may always be very slightly stringy. Solid and a bit stodgy but very reliable – if a bit dry on the end. Very good value. (JR)
5ème Cru Classé Smudgy, indisintinct nose. Quite harsh and chewy tannins. Very solid and unappealing. This won’t convert anyone to Bordeaux, I’m afraid. (JR)
Deep ruby/purple with a relatively evolved bouquet of plums, cherries, and black currants, this wine is classy, with solidly constructed flavors of red and black fruits, moderate tannin, but a slightly abbreviated finish without a great deal of depth. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.
About the producer
It was on the site of Batailley in 1453 that one of the final battles (or “batailles”) of the Hundred Years’ War took place. Today owned by the Castéja family, the Fifth Growth is renowned for producing wine that is the epitome of classic Claret.
