The 1995 Batailley offers dusty black fruit on the nose, melted tar and graphite emerging with time. Personally, I would like more fruit for it comes across a little too austere. The palate is medium-bodied with light blackberry, a little tough in the middle. Age has not softened this Batailley and it still feels unapologetically foursquare on the finish. Not bad, but it does not feel as if it is going anywhere interesting. Tasted at the château.

Very dark crimson. Minerally nose. Good charge of cassis and some wet stoniness, and fine tannins, on the finish. A little austere, though with food it would probably be fine. (JR)

Mid crimson. Full, confident and slightly farmyardy on the nose. Attractively aromatic, believe it or not. Good palate attack and surprisingly well-melded tannins. This seems to have more weight than the 1996s. (JR)

Dark crimson right out to the rim. A mild, sweet nose. Slightly stringy. Not harmonious. A green, slightly unripe edge. Mean! (JR)
