The 1994 Batailley has a classic Pauillac nose: red fruit, antique bureau, cedar and tobacco. It's a little austere but nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with some drying tannins on the entry. Considering the vintage, it's a bit light with an attenuated finish. This should be drunk in the near future, and the estate is making far superior wines nowadays. Tasted at the château.

An attractive black/ruby/purple color is followed by aromas of sweet curranty fruit and new oak. Medium-bodied, with good ripeness, this sound, straightforward, well-made wine lacks depth and complexity, but it will provide pleasant, foursquare drinking for another 12-14 years.

About the producer
It was on the site of Batailley in 1453 that one of the final battles (or “batailles”) of the Hundred Years’ War took place. Today owned by the Castéja family, the Fifth Growth is renowned for producing wine that is the epitome of classic Claret.
