Score 17.5/20 · Drink 2013-2033, Jancis Robinson MW, Nov 2025

86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot. Opus One thinned the 2002 vintage to the lowest per-acre yield in a decade. 32-day skin contact. 20 months in new French oak . Glowing ruby with a pale rim. Not quite as fragrant as the 2001. A little bloody and solid rather than ethereal. Dry, chunky, grainy finish. Alcohol is not carried as gracefully as in the 2001. Slightly drying hot finish. (JR)

The 2002 Opus One is a clear step up over the 2001 and offers a round, lush, classic Napa style in its ripe black fruits, smoked tobacco, chocolate, and cedar pencil-like aromatics. Full-bodied on the palate, it stays nicely balanced, has ripe, supple tannins, and a great finish. If the 2001 is Bordeaux-like, this is pure Napa Valley goodness. It’s fully mature yet should easily evolve for another 10-15 years as well.
