Magnum. Part of a 60th-birthday celebration. Rich, almost gamey nose. Unexpectedly, a bit stricter and firmer than La Mission 1964 initially but then became richer. Tobacco notes and very smooth texture. (JR)

This was a hugely impressive bottle. Deep crimson, this wine looked as though it had quite a long life ahead. The strong smell of iodine should have told me straight away that is was Haut-Brion. Very dense, almost brooding but very complete and with lovely ripe fruit, presumably the result of the hot 1964 summer, this managed to make our bottle of Latour 1964 look almost puny. Hugely satisfying. (JR)
Crimson with signs of age at the rim. Broad tobacco and warm bricks nose – there was no doubt where this wine, served blind, came from. Very Gravesy, gentle and voluptuous but at its peak surely. A really exceptional 1964 bordeaux. (JR)
About the producer
Ch. Haut-Brion is the only classified growth in Pessac-Léognan. One of the five First Growths, it is renowned for producing both exceptional reds and whites. Along with its sister estate, Ch. la Mission Haut-Brion, it is part of the Clarence Dillon stable.
