Magnum. Very concentrated crimson. More angular than the Tassinaia 2001. No better really. Fuller perhaps. Big and bloody. Dense but not as winning – yet? Slightly salty. (JR)

The 2001 Lupicaia is another wine that bears the signature of a vintage affected by a spring frost. The wine's richness, depth and persistence are all marvelous. This is an intense, brawny Lupicaia that is still clearly too young to deliver real pleasure. Still, the wine's pedigree is impossible to miss. The 2001 is truly exceptional and clearly the finest Lupicaia to date. In 2001 Lupicaia contains a dollop of Petit Verdot, which adds further complexity.

Slightly charred notes on the nose. Very fine tannins. Dark ruby, almost brownish. Very fine, intense and perfumed. Appetising, very well done with a savoury finish. (JR)

The 2001 Lupicaia, which uses the estate’s best Cabernet and Merlot, is an impenetrable ruby in color, and the powerful, expansive flavors of berry fruit, eucalyptus, and coconut, the dense and shapely palate, and the rich, sensual finish are the attributes of a wine of superior class and caliber. The wine will drink well for another decade and a half. Apr 2006, www.robertparker.com
