Good saturated dark red. Reticent but pure aromas of crushed blackberry, blueberry, black cherry and mint. Sweet on entry, then distinctly cool in the middle palate, with a tight, medicinal character. This is almost grapey today but impressively dense. Comes across as a bit drier and less refined than the Clos de la Roche-and not quite as long-but extremely young for a 2003.

A stunner, the sexy, medium to full-bodied 2003 Clos St.-Denis explodes from the glass with aromas of waxy black cherries. Armed with huge amplitude, this is a sensual wine packed with black cherries, blackberries, and stony black fruits. Powerful yet suave, it also displays a wonderfully long, fruit-filled finish. (I re-tasted it from the same bottle 6 days later and, while its fruit had begun drying out, this wine showed no signs of oxidation.) Projected maturity: 2006-2010. Dee p ruby-red. More floral aromas of bitter cherry, violet pastille, chocolate, espresso, mocha and licorice. Juicy, tightly wound and precise, but showing less personality today than the Clos de la Roche. Very primary and tightly wound; berry and mocha flavors are at once precise and supple. Long and pliant on the back end.
