Tasting notes
Score 95/100 · Drink 2024-2030, Eric Guido, Vinous, Aug 2024

The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is vividly fresh and pure, with a gorgeous bouquet of black cherries, incense, sage and a whiff of spearmint. It impresses with its purity, soft textures and vibrantly ripe red berry fruits, guided by zesty acidity and underscored by saline minerals and nuances of spice. The slightest hint of sous bois is the only tell of the 2004's 20 years as a subtle tug of residual tannins and a tinge of licorice linger. Impossible to ignore!

Dried wild herbs and violets, as well as aged meat, woody notes and anise, leading to a palate that has a firm frame of tannins, holding a smooth array of plum and dark-berry flavors amid woody, earthy depth. Drink now.

Score 96/100 · Drink 2016-2034, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Mar 2015

The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is endowed with notable energy and class. Aromatic, vibrant and still quite fresh, the 2004 has it all. As is often the case with great wines, the 2004 is going to provide a wide window of pure drinking pleasure. Today, the 2004 is stellar, but it also has the pedigree to age well for many years. Hints of sweet tobacco, licorice and dried flowers all add nuance on the highly expressive, finessed finish. The 2004 is just beginning to enter the early part of its maturity, yet there is no rush; the 2004 is a long-distance runner.
