Cerbaiona's rich, heady 1999 Brunello di Montalcino has developed very nicely in the bottle. It offers red cherry, menthol, cocoa and tobacco nuances in an extraordinary display of finesse and elegance with a soft, generous personality supported by firm, caressing tannins and a kick of alcohol on the long finish. Ideally a few more years of cellaring are warranted but those fortunate enough to own this sublime Brunello will have a hard time exercising such patience. A great effort. Anticipated maturity

The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino is powerful and classic, ripe and sweet in aroma, fragrant but with ample warmth from the alcohol, solid and velvety on the palate with plush, caressing tannins, tar and herbs on the finish, and a stylish, classy personality. Drink: 2005-2018. Importer: Vias, New York, NY; tel. (212) 629-0200

Bright, deep red. Complex nose combines plum, currant, cherry, tobacco and nutty oak. Juicy and penetrating, with lovely thrust and inner-mouth floral character, accentuated by bright but integrated acidity. Classic sangiovese with real clarity and grip, not to mention energy in the mouth. Finishes firmly tannic and very long. Excellent Brunello.

Mid crimson. Fresh, vibrant nose. Very sweet, ripe palate entry then autumnal flavours – amazingly drinkable already. Tannins are there on the finish but only in a minor note. This is already very gorgeous. (JR)
