The deeply-colored 2001 Brunello di Montalcino from La Serena is an engaging effort. Made in a super-ripe, rich style, it offers plenty of cherries in liqueur, licorice, tobacco, menthol and sweet toasted oak flavors on its ample, generous frame with outstanding concentration as well as length and terrific overall balance. Deep red. Redcurrant and cranberry aromas complicated by woodsy, floral and herbal elements. Suave and easygoing, with rather cool flavors of red berries, herbs and menthol. Tangy acids give the wine good focus, but the dusty tannins are a tad dry.
