From The Wine Society's cellar. Deep garnet with brick rim. Very rich on the nose. Rich in fruit but meaty, too. Fragrant with undergrowth. Juicy, fresh and so full of life for a wine of this age. Bright and still big and chewy. Lots of pleasure in a such a mature wine. (JH)

Fully mature and just slightly past its prime, the 1988 Hermitage La Chapelle still has fruit and is a balanced, enjoyable wine at this point. Offering mature currant fruits as well as saddle leather, decayed flowers, and minty herbs, it's medium-bodied, has a soft, charming mouthfeel, and a good finish. It's best drunk up, but it’s still a classy wine.

Bright, round and fully evolved. Tannins disappeared. Fresh and lively. Rather sumptuous. Not quite the life of the Verset Cornas 1998. Complex and superior. Lightly salty. (JR)

Relatively healthy, mature ruby. Lowkey, fully evolved nose. Slightly dusty and then very sweet and mild on the palate. Drying on the palate. It could certainly give pleasure now. But I’m not too confident about the long term. This is not a good bottle of 1988. (JR)
