I am sure I tasted the 1992 Lafleur around 20 years ago, but memories are vague. It was the first vintage whereby Jacques and Sylvie Guinaudeau moderated yields, cutting around half the bunches and making a selection in the vines at harvest time. One anomaly is that this vintage is 100% Merlot. Now 33 years old, this has a tertiary nose of undergrowth, tobacco and light herbaceous scents. Medium-bodied with grainy tannins, its acidity imparts freshness and keeps this off-vintage Lafleur on its toes. the 1992 lacks substance but is pretty and unpretentious, perhaps preferable to the 1993. Drink now. Tasted from ex-château magnum at Kate & Kon's 40-Year vertical in Austria.

Lafleur has fashioned a blockbuster wine in 1992 that must be tasted to be believed. After seeing so many diluted, light, soft wines, it is hard to believe the level of concentration Lafleur achieved. Lafleur's color is an impressively saturated dark purple/black. The tight nose offers up sweet cassis and jammy black-cherry scents, intertwined with aromas of Asian spices and minerals. The wine possesses great richness, medium to full body, admirable density, layers of ripe fruit that linger on the palate, considerable tannin, and remarkable length. This would be a great wine in any vintage, but in 1992 it is a remarkable achievement. An amazing wine for the year! Anticipated maturity: 2000-2015.
