Brooding, powerful, intense nose with youthfulness that belies its age, yet there is proper development too with leathery, liquorice and not a small amount of volatile complexity. The structure is very supple and open now, with softened, grainy tannins. A stalwart bordeaux. (RH)

The 2008 La Lagune has a forward and quite intense bouquet with blackberry, tobacco, cooked meat with hints of white pepper and then later, pressed rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, well knit with neatly integrated and judicious oak. There is a gentle but firm grip on the palate: hints of allspice and sea salt. There is a discernable a chalky texture with respect to the tannins towards the finish, suggesting that this will benefit from another couple of years in bottle. Good potential. Tasted at the La Lagune vertical at the château.

Tasted blind. Dark garnet, very concentrated-looking. Light, inky nose. Masses of dry tannin. Needs just a tad more luscious fruit for perfection. But it’s certainly appetising – just a bit stony and bony. (JR)

Ripe and complex on the nose, with juicy black fruit and graphite notes giving complexity. Suitably bitter, savoury highlights on the finish – this is serious and substantial. (RH)
