Tasting notes
The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Pian di Conte shows a deep red color, tapering off to rose and finally amber. Its captivating bouquet mixes crushed black raspberries with brown spices, cedar box, hints of camphor and tobacco. A bit of soy comes forward with time in the glass, yet this is forgivable for its age. Soft, silky textures give way to a noticeable inner-sweetness over a feminine frame. It showcases mature red fruits that come across as fleshy today, all lifted by bright acidity as salty mineral and earth tones settle in. There’s an alluring burst of savory cherry sauce, cinnamon and clove. Ultimately, this finishes quite quickly, leaving a subtle coating of residual tannin that tugs at the senses. The 2001 is fully mature yet teetering toward the downward slope. I would advise drinking it over the next few years for optimal enjoyment. Sampled from the winery cellar.

Consulting oenologist Carlo Ferrini has turned out a beautiful wine at this historic estate, a property which he speaks of in effusive terms. Talenti’s sublime 2001 Brunello Pian di Conte exhibits a deep, translucent ruby color. It opens with captivating, vibrant aromatics, with notes of freshly cut roses, raspberries and licorice. Gorgeously expressive yet delicate on the palate, it offers layers of dark fruit, earthiness and sweet oak supported by a refined, classic structure, with exceptional length and fine, silky tannins on the fresh finish. It is a superb effort. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2021. Importer: Robert Chadderdon Selections, New York, NY; tel. (212) 757-8185

Deep red-ruby. Dark berries, bitter chocolate and red licorice on the rather modern-style nose. Big, rich and sweet; chewy yet smooth. Brooding flavors of dark berries, licorice and charred oak. Very sexy Brunello, finishing with big but reasonably supple tannins; really clings to the palate.
