Saturated red-ruby. Darker aromas of black raspberry, dark chocolate, mocha, coffee and minerals. Round, broad and liqueur-like but quite closed and inexpressive today. Superconcentrated, minerally wine with considerable aging potential. Finishes subtly complex, youthful and lively, with brisk acids contributing to an impression of sappiness. This may well need a decade in the cellar. One of the most impressive 2003s I tasted from the Cote de Beaune in November.

A concentrated, tight, slightly austere, yet ripe wine, the 2003 Volnay Caillerets (red) offers aromas of dark jammy fruits. On the palate, loads of dark fruits as well as minerals are ensconced in its firm (yet ripe) tannic grip. This light to medium-bodied effort’s future will ultimately be determined by two competing elements: its copious fruit and significant tannin. Projected maturity: 2009-2017. Bright, saturated ruby-red. Wild, deep aromas of dark fruits, game and earth, with the most apparent minerality of these 2003s. Large-scaled and dense, but with mineral lift giving the wine excellent inner-palate energy. Very fresh fruit flavors of cherry and raspberry are complicated by strong earthy soil tones. Finishes with big, broad, thoroughly buffered tannins and lovely persistence. Clearly the strongest wine in the cave in 2003.
