Score 93/100 · Drink 2029-2038, Angus Hughson, Vinous, May 2026
The 1986 Shiraz Mount Edelstone, from a fabled vintage, has an open-knit and exotic bouquet of spice bazaar, red cherry and licorice. Punchy, strong and well focused with firm tannins, the 1986 unfolds layers of blackberry, dried herb and spicy flavours. This is chalky and firm in a claret style, with room to evolve further over time.

Evolved ruby. Minerals – lead pencils? – and rather appealing on the nose. Firm with pronounced acidity and even some sherbet character on the palate. Just slightly too severe for its own good but some lovely flavours and should be a real treat with food. (JR)
