The 1978 Shiraz Mount Edelstone is beautifully composed, with layers of ripe blackberry, dark soil and plenty of mature complexity of savoury earth and old leather. Weighty and fleshy with warming alcohol and quite supple tannins, the 1978 retains excellent balance through the lingering finish. This is at its peak and will stay there for a little while.

Still some black in the ruby. Less assertive nose than the 1979 but no shortage of ripe fruit, slightly reminiscent of cough medicine, on the palate. Burly and boisterous rather than fine but an impressive survivor. (JR)
