Tasted at the Gruaud dinner at The Ledbury, the 1987 Gruaud Larose is a vintage that I have only encountered once, though it provided a pleasant surprise. It exhibits some bricking with age, though the nose is attractive with dried herbs and tinned tomato scents, implying some underripe fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a lovely savory seam, a ferrous element and a touch of piquancy towards the finish. Much more cohesive than I was anticipating with a harmonious finish, this bottle has certainly lasted well considering the vintage. Tasted June 2011.

Typical of most of the Cordier wines in 1987, Gruaud-Larose is a surprisingly robust, chunky wine, with plenty of weedy, cassis fruit hiding under a veneer of hard tannins. This medium-bodied, well-endowed wine should keep well for a 1987. Anticipated maturity: Now-2000. Last tasted, 1/93.
