The 2001 Château de Myrat has a relatively light but focused bouquet of yellow flowers, Aszú and saffron notes; touches of almond and French patisserie come through with time. The palate is well balanced with a viscous opening. Tangy marmalade, quince and orange peel intermingle with saffron and subtle ginger notes, fanning out with confidence toward the finish. This is maturing with style and panache, one of several Sauternes that has meliorated in recent years.

Tasted at the de Myrat vertical at the property. The 2001 Château de Myrat put in a good performance a couple of years ago. Here, it has that attractive quince and dried honey aromas, a touch of almond paste and cinnamon developing in the glass. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, miles fresher than previous vintages with a tangy quince and marmalade finish that just does not quite deliver the length. It is not quite as good as the previous bottle, but it was clearly the best de Myrat since the estate was reborn in the late 1980s. This is worth seeking out if you see it on the market or in a restaurant. Tasted April 2016.

Medium gold. Pure, ripe, tangy aromas of orange, apricot and honey. Moderately thick and intense, with fruit-driven flavors of orange, apricot, honey, creamed corn and spices. Bright acids carry the flavors nicely on the pure, lingering finish. The best wine I've had from this chateau in recent memory.
