Roberto Voerzio's 2005 Barolo La Serra is dark, powerful and also a bit monolithic, almost as if it was untouched by time. Black cherry, plum, spice, menthol, new leather and spice give the La Serra much of its dark, brooding personality. With time in the glass, some of the more lifted aromatics that are so typical of this high altitude site begin to emerge, but the La Serra remains tightly wound. This is one of the most reticent showings for the 2005 yet. (AG) 93+

The 2005 Barolo La Serra, which was so sexy and expressive upon release, seems to have shut down a touch over the last year. It is a lovely, focused Barolo built on a core of fresh, floral red fruit that carries through a long, delicate finish. The wine's balance and class are unmistakable.
Good bright, deep red. Classic Barolo nose combines redcurrant, raspberry, camphor, mocha, tobacco and a balsamic element. Silky, lush and concentrated, with a firm spine of acidity giving cut and energy to the red fruit flavors. A lovely and beautifully balanced expression of Barolo, and the longest of these wines to this point by a wide margin. Finishes with suave tannins and a strong impression of energy. (Incidentally, there's no 2006 La Serra here owing to hail.)
The 2005 Barolo La Serra is especially generous and inviting this year. Layers of dark cherries, sweet spices, violets and minerals emerge from this remarkable multi-faceted wine. The fruit carries through all the way to the long, polished finish. With time in the glass this perfumed Barolo turns almost Burgundian in a rare display of superb elegance and harmony. The 2005 Barolo La Serra is simply awesome. In fact it may be the finest version of this wine yet.
