Tasting notes
One of the greatest wines of our vertical for sure, the 2004 has an absolutely magnificent nose of dark damson and rich plum. Smokey and earthy, it has a chewy mouthfeel, dense and rich, with a tightly packed structure that starts to release more and more with air. The texture is satin-like, rich and voluptuous, but with charm and elegance. Smokey minerality is just emerging; the wine still shaking off the signs of youth at 18 years old. An outstanding bottle of one of the great vintages.

The star of the show, the 2004 L’Apparita is simply phenomenal. It is also the only wine in this vertical served from magnum, which almost certainly makes a big difference in how the wine shows. Fresh, nuanced and polished, the 2004 brings together power and finesse in a way that is thrilling. I went back to 2004 at the end of the tasting and it was even better. What a wine!
The 2004 L'Apparita shows the finesse that is the hallmark of this great Tuscan vintage. A silky, nuanced, feminine wine, the 2004 is pure class. Sweet tobacco, spices, flowers and dark red berries all flesh out in the glass. Today, the 2004 is a little more refined than the 2006. I hope to be able to taste them both again some day in the future. A superb, textured finish makes it impossible to resist a second, and then a third, taste. This is a wine of the heart and soul. Wow!
The 2004 L'Apparita is a decidedly more structured, mineral-driven expression of Merlot. This superb wine is packed with the essence of blackberry liqueur, chocolate, minerals and sweet toasted oak. Made in a super-ripe style it nevertheless possesses much vibrancy as well as balance.
