Served out of magnum at a supper when selecting Mentor Week candidates, this is a briliant wine that is effortlessly drinkable, still full of primary dark fruit flavours but now with melted tannins and gentle waves of cigar box and dried herbs. Great quality, and the most popular wine around the table hands down.

It has been several years since I tasted the 2010 Fourcas Hosten. It has a very serious, tightly wound nose that comes across a bit grumpy compared directly against the more exuberant 2009. Give it time and it eventually offers crisp blackberry laced with pencil shavings and touches of mint. The fresh, vibrant palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled tannins and more mineralité than the prior vintage. I particularly admire the finish on this 2010, and once the aromatics find their groove, it turns into a really excellent, silky-textured Listrac that should drink well for 15–20 years. Recommended.

In the heart of Listrac, surrounded by three hectares of gardens, this château has just over 40 hectares of vines – with Merlot planted on clay-limestone and Cabernet Sauvignon on the gravel plateau.
