2012 Monthelie

From 8 parcels, the 2012 Monthélie has a generous bouquet with red cherries and bergamot, a puff of smoke emerging from the glass. There is a real candied, almost confectionary shop aroma that begins to surface with aeration. The palate is crisp and simple on the entry. It is a little rustic, but clean and fresh, with a slightly hard finish. I have been an admirer of Pierre Morey’s wines since he was crafting magic at Anne-Claude Leflaive between 1988 and 1998. Since he departed, his own domaine has continued producing top notch white Burgundy in parallel with his successful negociant operation, “Morey Blanc”. There are 10 hectares of vines within the domaine that has adopted biodynamic principles since 1998. I met with his daughter Anne Morey, who immediately apologized for the lack of samples due to the tiny quantities produced. Like many, there were affected by the travails of the growing season but Anne seemed positive about the wines. “There is good depth in 2012 and there is great terroir expression and great density,” she opined.
