Score 90/100 · Drink 2004-2012, Robert Parker, Feb 2004

Paul Autard’s 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape is a forward, heady effort revealing notes of Asian spices, new saddle leather, peppery, sweet black cherry fruit, and wood smoke. Medium to full-bodied, lush, and surprisingly opulent for this structured vintage, it will drink well for 7-8 years. Represented by Russell Herman, Berkeley Heights, NJ; tel. (908) 771-9082, various American importers.

Deep red. Perfumed aromas of red fruits and gingerbread, with an exotic hint of apricot. Fat, lush, creamy and sweet; not especially complex but stuffed with liqueur-like fruit. A dense, chewy, tactile Chateauneuf with no shortage of verve. Finishes with sweet tannins and excellent length.

Red-ruby. Liqueur-like red fruits on the nose. Dense, sweet, pliant and rich. Enticing red fruit flavors are lifted by a candied quality. Finishes with fine tannins and excellent length.
