Almost Pinot Noir-like with its forest floor, sweet cherries, vanilla and spice, the 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape is a blend of 65% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 8% Mourvedre and the balance other permitted varieties, that was aged half in stainless steel and half in barrels. It offers moderated depth and richness, yet stays nicely balanced and fresh. It’s a good wine that’s drinking at point.

Deep red. Suave oak spices accent cherry and blackberry on the nose. Creamy, sweet and gentle in structure, with a vanilla-accented cherry preserve flavor and persistent cinnamon and clove notes on the finish. This is delicious right now.

Cherry liqueur – lots of alcohol and sweetness. Exotic fruit and some oak notes. Lots of pleasure and lots of potential. Tannins well managed and more ‘civilised’ than most but this is certainly Châteauneuf-du-Pape . Neat though not especially persistent finish. Assemblage from tank and casks. (JR)

Deep red with a bright rim. Quite oaky on the nose, with sweet, lush raspberry fruit complemented by a note of bonfire. Round and supple, with the strong oak spice character threatening to overwhelm the wine's substantial fruit. I wonder what this would have been like with a bit less oak influence.
