I loved both of these 2006s from proprietor Jean-Paul Versino. Starting with the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape, this classic beauty has tons of garrigue, currants, licorice and Provencal herbs in a medium-bodied, old school, complex and layered style. I’d be thrilled if I had a case in the cellar.

Jean-Paul Versino. Cask sample. Maturing colour. Heady and thick. Surprisingly forward. Some animal flavours. Pretty funky and thick. Tough tannins on the finish with only just enough fruit. Pretty drying finish – not the most luscious Châteauneuf 2006. (JR)
Versino. Very sweet and slightly raisined. Meaty, savoury and sour cherry flavours. Plenty of fruit. Tannns are thick and dry at the moment. Fresh enough. (JH)
Inky ruby. Intensely perfumed nose offers a seductive array of red berry and cherry scents, with garrigue and anise nuances adding complexity. Palate-staining raspberry and cherry flavors are deep and strikingly pure, carrying through on the long, spicy finish. There's serious, youthful grip here but more than ample fruit to keep things in balance.
