Looking at the traditional cuvee, the 2005 Châteauneuf du Pape is still ruby/opaque in color, with hints of purple at the center. A blend of 80% Grenache and 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre that was mostly destemmed and brought up in 80% foudre and 20% in barrels (one-third of which were new), it yields gorgeous notes of cassis, sweet blackberries, wild herbs, licorice and subtle garrigue on the nose. This is followed by a pure, elegant and full-bodied Châteauneuf du Pape that has fabulous fruit and texture, good freshness and a clean finish. I’d be thrilled to have a case in the cellar. Drink it over the coming 4-5 years.

Dark purple. Highly complex aromas of smoky dark berries, kirsch and dried flowers, with a slow-building dark chocolate quality adding depth. Deep, chewy and sweet, offering lush blackberry and cassis flavors, velvety tannins and outstanding finishing thrust. This displays noteworthy power for a "basic" wine.

The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition reveals great fruit and a dark ruby color in a masculine, palate-saturating style, with notes of meat, black fruits, licorice, earth, and roasted herbs. The wine is dense, moderately high in tannin, full-bodied, and should be at its best between 2010 and 2020+. Tasting at Janasse is fun. It is a large estate of 195 acres with 45 of them situated in Chateauneuf du Pape. Even if you weren’t obsessed with their fabulous Chateauneuf du Papes, they have a portfolio of brilliant wines from Cotes du Rhone as well as a vin de pays. Young proprietor Christophe Sabon, working with his wife and father, continues to fine-tune his winemaking skills. He is already brilliant at reds and shows increasing confidence in the quality of his white wine cuvees. Importer: Eric Solomon, European Cellars, Charlotte, NC; tel. (704) 358-1565

Domaine de la Janasse's 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is stunning stuff that is clean, pure and precise. The nose is big and perfumed with dark fruit, raspberry, spice, earth and licorice notes. The palate really shines on the this wine and is medium to full bodied with a gorgeous texture, rich fruit and a very long finish.
