Chapoutier’s 2005 Châteauneuf du Pape Croix de Bois is gorgeous, and while I’ve always preferred the Barbe Rac to this cuvee, I think the quality between the two is neck and neck. A blend of 100% Grenache that was vinified and aged all in concrete, this naked, raw expression of the variety gives up classic jammy dark fruits, toasted bread, garrigue, red licorice and sweet spice on the nose. Silky, refined and elegant, yet with full-bodied richness and tons of character, it’s a knockout bottle of Grenache to drink anytime over the coming 5-7 years.

100% Grenache. Vinified in closed concrete tanks. Destemmed. Élevage in tanks for 14-16 months. Mid ruby. Some real life here. Racy and rich. Good appetising stuff and very Châteauneuf. Slightly dry on the end but so much more alive than most of these 2005 Cuvées Spéciales! Round and sweet but not too sweet. Hint of rose petals. Electric energy. (JR)

Bright red. Sexy bouquet of fresh red berries, Asian spices and smoky herbs. Supple raspberry and cherry liqueur flavors coat the palate, betraying no rough edges or earthiness. Offers pinot noir-like sweetness and silkiness of texture, and finishes with gentle grip and excellent sappy persistence. This is already gorgeous.

Deep red. Pure raspberry and strawberry preserve aromas, with an impressive mineral lift and fresh garrigue accents. Sweet, silky and focused, showing bright red berry flavors and striking balance. Finishes fresh and juicy, with no obvious tannins. The liqueur-like, concentrated raspberry tone carries beautifully.
