Oberto's 2004 Barolo Brunate opens with attractive scents of smoke, tobacco, tar, licorice, lavender, mocha and black cherries. Powerful and brooding, the 2004 captures plenty of Brunate character. The aromatics are just a touch forward, which suggests the 2004 needs to be enjoyed over the next handful of years. Still, all the elements have come together quite nicely in the 2004.

The 2004 Barolo Vigneto Brunate is a big, hulking wine with a dark, brooding personality. Masses of vibrant black cherries, tar, smoke and earthiness lurk beneath a veneer of new oak that needs some time to settle down. The wine offers tons of length in a muscular style, with broad yet well-integrated tannins. This large-scaled Barolo will require patience, but it seems to offer much potential.

The wine offers tons of length in a muscular style, with broad yet well-integrated tannins. This large-scaled Barolo will require patience, but it seems to offer much potential. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. La Morra is a village that is dominated by its two towering figures, Elio Altare and Roberto Voerzio, both of whom have had a profound impact on other producers. Tucked away off the beaten track from the center of town is Oberto. Despite keeping a much lower profile than many of his colleagues Fabio Oberto makes wines that can hold their own with the best producers, not just in La Morra, but in Piedmont.
