David Léclapart’s NV Blanc de Blancs L'Amateur (2020) is sourced from six distinct plots across Trépail and vinified exclusively in enameled tanks. The vines, averaging 45 years of age and spanning the village from north to south, offer what Léclapart describes as “a panoramic photo of Trépail.” Disgorged in April 2024 without dosage, this cuvée reveals an aromatic bouquet of white peach, lemon zest, crisp pear and hazelnut. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, fine-boned and incisive, with electrifying acidity and a saline finish.

Light gold. Suave smoke- and mineral-accented aromas of fresh lemon and lime, with hints of white flowers, anise and ginger in the background. I'd have guessed that there was some oak used here, but there wasn't. Palate-staining citrus and orchard fruit flavors show excellent clarity and put on weight with air. Finishes spicy and long, with repeating floral character and a touch of chalkiness. Note that this wine is not labeled "2010" but rather has "L10" on the back label. Dec 2014, www.vinous.com

The NV (2011) Extra Brut L'Amateur, Léclapart's entry-level wine, is soft and nicely textured throughout. Almonds, lemon oil, white flowers and mint take shape in the glass. Overall, the Amateur is a pretty wine, although it could use a little more continuity through the mid-palate and finish. A slight vegetal note typical of 2011 appears with time in the glass, but it is not overly dominant. In fact, the 2011 just gets better and better with air. L'Amateur is the only Léclapart cuvée done in tank. Disgorged January 2015. Jul 2015, www.vinous.com, Drink: 2015-2019
