Score 93/100 · Drink 2017-2025, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Apr 2017

(aged in 100% new oak): Dark medium red. Explosive aromas of blackberry liqueur, black cherry and mocha. Plush, sweet and generous on the palate, showing lovely balance to its flavors of wild raspberry, plum, crushed rock, smoke and spices. As round and full as this is, there's still a fresh, crunchy quality to its fruit. Finishes ripely tannic and long. A great showing, although further aging will bring mellower truffle and underbrush notes. Arnaud Mortet noted that his late father Denis carried out a severe green harvest in 2001, adding that he has always considered 2001 to be one of his father's best vintages.

Deep, bright red. Reticent, complex aromas of blackberry, blueberry, flowers and smoked meat. Silky, broad and pliant, with chewy, deep, sweet flavors of black fruits, licorice and earth. Wonderfully seamless wine, finishing with very suave tannins. A very successful vintage for this cuvee

Fashioned from the northernmost premier cru of the commune (it borders Brochon), the black-colored 2001 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux is from 65-year old vines that produced nothing but millerand berries. Roasted blackberries and licorice are intermingled with tar in this offering’s aromatics. Medium-bodied, loaded with coffee, blackberries, cassis, as well as spices, it explodes on the taster’s mouth, basting it with its copious fruit and tannin. This powerful, highly structured wine is highly concentrated, enormously extracted, and dense. Projected maturity: 2005-2012. Importer: Martine’s Wines, San Raphael, CA; tel. (415) 883-0400

(from 70+-year-old vines that were 100% millerande Saturated, deep ruby-red. Explosive nose combines black raspberry, game and sexy sweet oak. Thick but lively and pure in the mouth, with strong mineral and coffee notes. Bright but quite backward. Finishes very firm, gripping and long, with considerable class. Strong tannins are supported by the wine's chewy extract.
