Score 98/100 · Drink 2035-2060, Angus Hughson, Vinous, Apr 2023

This perfectly proportioned 2002 Shiraz Hill of Grace sits in suspended animation, still holding tight after 21 years in bottle. It delivers beautifully pristine and precise blackberry, clove, pepper and graphite aromas that are just starting to open up. A seamless palate follows - meaty and peppery with hints of the Australian bush underpinned by still vigorous tannins holding all the pieces in place. A vibrant, energetic finish offers up an almost perfect conclusion.

An atypically cool growing season rescued by a warm, dry autumn . Bright, snappy, youthful, dense fruit, plum and cola, blue and black glossy berries; a touch of spice and strawberry gum again, with fine, crisp, snappy tannins. Lovely, drinking beautifully, but atypical. (MA)

Deep garnet in color, the 2002 Hill of Grace has an entrancing nose with profound aromas of warm black cherries, crushed blackberries and mulberries plus a touch of wild blueberries and hints of allspice, violets and toast. It is full-bodied, rich and seductive in the mouth, and yet it has lovely poise with a crisp acid line and a medium to firm level of fine-grained tannins plus great length. Delicious now, it will reward the patient and should drink to 2040+. Importer: Negociants USA, Napa, CA; tel. (707) 259-0993

Cool summer but great ripe autumn. Dark purple. Five spices and lots of opulence. Masses of tannin too. Rather Napa Valley really. For the moment a little pinched but there is lots tucked in there. (JR)
