Tasting notes
The 2002 Le Chambertin Grand Cru has more delineation and less reduction compared directly with the Clos-de-Bèze. I still find it a little feral and missing the class of say, Mugneret-Gibourg’s Ruchottes-Chambertin. The palate is sweet on the entry with rounded tannin, tarry red fruit mixed with a hint of soy. However, the finish is missing some complexity and cuts away a bit short for a Chambertin. Tasted at Sarah Marsh MW’s 2002 Red Burgundy tasting.

Quite dark garnet. Exciting nose with a suggestion of fresh vegetation. Masses of rich intense fruit. A marvel of intensity! Pretty pure pleasure. There is still lots of acid and tannin buried under here but the fruit is just gorgeous – a panoply of spice and majesty. Fine tannins still perceptible but overall stunning. (JR)
This too is extremely ripe with black earthy fruit and much bigger, more intense and more structured flavors that are deep, delicious and impressively long though there is noticeable finishing warmth. This delivers a lovely combination of size, weight and an inner core of sap and the structure is such that this will require plenty of cellar time.
