The 2007 Chambertin Grand Cru is showing beautifully, and along with the 1999, it might be my pick of these vintages for drinking today. Soaring from the glass with aromas of sweet red berries and plums mingled with peonies, rose petals, sweet spices and bergamot, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and sensual, with a fleshy, enveloping profile, beautiful purity of fruit and a suave, perfumed profile. An early but not especially ripe vintage in the Côte d'Or, 2007 didn't produce many great Burgundies, but this is one of them.

I tasted from the single barrel of this wine. 100% whole grapes. Liquorice, density, majesty. Good freshness. No second best. Hint of tar. Something animal but not evolved/gamey. Very powerful nose – some black fruits – all black! So alive! Such energy underneath – it positively drives the wine across the palate. So round . Not a light vintage if this is the evidence! Although on the finish this wine is oddly approachable, and perhaps not quite as long as in some years. (JR)

(all vendange entier, with the fruit crushed by foot) Saturated red-ruby. Exotic aromas of black fruits, sweet spices, game and pepper. Densely packed and extremely young, with the strong peppery quality from the stems carrying through in the mouth. Comes across as less sweet and fruity today than Dugat's other grand crus. This powerful wine is almost hard today, and its building tannins will require at least a decade of bottle aging.
