Very intense fruit and quite a shock to taste the first New World wine of the evening – minty cassis. Intense, ripe and lively. Fine tannins. Not a blockbuster but fine pure intensity of fruit. Smooth deep chocolate-rich tannins with a fine grip at the very end and still a way to go. (JH)

The minty, chocolatey, currant-styled 2001 Shiraz Georgia’s Paddock may be too herbal for some, but I enjoyed its medium-bodied, dense, ripe, nicely-textured personality.
