I continue to just love this vintage, and the 2009 Côte-Rôtie La Landonne from René is a sensational bottle of wine that Northern Rhône lovers should seek out. Beautifully concentrated, yet fresh and elegant, with full-bodied aromas and flavors of black raspberries, spring flowers, crushed rocks and spice, it’s already approachable (which is unusual by this cuvée’s standards) and can be drunk any time over the coming two decades.

Tasted blind. Mid ruby. Pale rim. Sweet and very ripe on the nose. Then dry and a bit dusty on the finish. Not quite enough to hold it all together in the middle. I wonder whether it will ever take on quite enough flesh to deliver gorgeousness? But it is juicy and fun – almost ready. (JR)

Bright ruby. Black and blue fruits on the nose and palate, with an array of spice and floral qualities adding dimension. Rich but very lively, with impressive intensity and concentration but no sense of heaviness. Supple tannins add shape to the extremely long finish, which features notes of star anise, candied violet and cracked pepper.

Showing beautifully, the 2009 Cote Rotie La Landonne offers aromas of tapenade, bouquet garni, asphalt, blackberries, cassis, roasted meats and additional black fruits. More evolved and softer than the 2010, with a long, full-bodied finish, it can be drunk now and over the next 10-15 years. Rene Rostaing’s elegant style is well-displayed in both 2010 and the riper, more fleshy, exuberant 2009 vintage. Always the sexiest wine in Rostaing’s cellar is the Cote Rotie Cote Blonde. It includes 3-4% co-fermented Viognier and is always the most seamless wine resembling haute couture. Importer: Manny Berk, The Rare Wine Co., Sonoma, CA; tel. (707) 996-4484
