Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens ’11 from Thierry Glantenay appears to have some whole bunch on the slightly green, tertiary nose; one that is well defined and more traditional in style vis-à-vis its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with the oak deftly embroidered into the fleshy red and black fruit, with poise and focus on the finish. This is a lovely Pommard that should drink well for several years, though I think Thierry has conjured better wines.

Bright cherry red. Rich and gamey and very broad in its aromatic appeal. Lots of rich fruit even if less absolute purity than in the best Volnays of his. Broad and much less obvious tannin than in most Pommard PCs. A very fine polish on this one! They’re hoping for grand cru status for Épeneaux and Rugiens. (JR)
