Score 90/100 · Drink 2018-2030, Neal Martin, Oct 2018

The 1990 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru offers plenty of ripe red berry fruit, quite floral in style with crushed violet, though not as refined or entrancing as the 1991 by direct comparison. With further aeration there is a hint of tomato vine implying maybe a few vines did not reach full maturity? The palate is founded on supple tannin, fresh raspberry and cranberry fruit laced with white pepper and clove, moderate in length but lacking the complexity and nuance of other vintages. This is not going to improve further but it should last another 12 to 15 years. Tasted at the Gouges retrospective at La Cabotte.

For years, the English press has been reporting that this domaine has returned to the form it exhibited in the fifties and sixties, when it was the reference point for the wines of Nuits St.-Georges. Some progress is noticeable, but these are not profound wines. They are cleanly made in an international style, meaning everything fits within well-defined technical parameters. The Nuits St.-Georges-Les St.-Georges possesses a subtle, spicy, red fruit-scented nose touched lightly by oak. In the mouth, it is lean, elegant, and understated, with a tannic finish. Again, it is a correct wine, but not exciting. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Chester, VT.
