Score 92/100 · Drink 2021-2034, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux, Jul 2021

Still fairly closed, with notes of grilled Provence herbs, tar, charcoal, resin and crushed mint leaf. 2006 was a relatively cool vintage with some pretty surly tannins at the beginnning, and this needs time in the glass to open up. There is a subtly and nuance on display, as you find in so many Canon vintages, with precise and well crafted tannins A wine that is ready to drink now but can easily age for another few decades. 35hl/h yield, 80% new oak, the highest level seen at the estate (partly the vintage, partly fashion at the time in St Emilion) well integrated but leaving a trace of grilled cedar and tar on the finish. Harvest October 4 to 10.

Beautifully concentrated, rich and textured, with just a hint of maturity, the 2008 Château Canon offers classic notes of black cherry, mineral, truffle, spice, and scorched earth. Deep, rich, medium to full-bodied, and classic in style, with solid balance, it needs another 2-4 years to hit prime time but will keep for another two decades.

Tasted blind. Slightly weak crimson. Some fruit-cake evolution on the nose. Minerals and just enough fruit ripeness. Chalky finish. (JR)
