'An outstanding vintage of powerful, lively wines that are widely regarded as one of the truly legendary vintages in Piedmont.' Surprisingly concentrated mature ruby. More coherent, complex and more youthful than the 1964! Sweet dried-fruit notes with hints of tobacco. Impressive fullness of fruit on the nose. Succulent and lively and with plenty of depth on the palate and with the most gorgeous, long, grainy tannins that only age can deliver. (WS)

Mature mid ruby with bricky rim. A hint of oxidation at first, but underneath real concentration and depth of fine fruit and more than a hint of iron. Gorgeous acidity and waves of fine, clinging tannins. Velvety and with gorgeous depth. Not a hint of oak, here. Not over the hill by far. Nothing short of stupendous. (WS)
Made in the reign of Giovanni Gaja. Bright, pale and bricky. Sweet and nutty like amontillado but not oxidised. Plum and undergrowth and sweet spice. Sweet decay. Dry and surprisingly firm and fresh in the mouth and very alive even with all those developed flavours. Tastes denser than the 61. And still has some grip on the finish but not (quite) drying out. (This was a gift from Sergio's cellar.) Very pale orange. Light, lifted and very slightly metallic on the nose. Very fresh – a bit of a relic with the alcohol and acid starting to show through. Bottled history? (JR)
