Score 92/100 · Drink 2016-2029, Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous, Mar 2024

The 2011 Saint-Joseph is delicious. Dried red and black fruits emerge from the glass, complemented by leathery shadings, crushed violets, cured meat, forest floor and tobacco. Offering moderate flavor concentration within a medium-bodies frame, the 2011 has evolved beautifully. Totally seamless and so original, the 2011 might not have the structure and density of the 2010, but it delights nonetheless. It should continue to provide pleasure for at least another five years.

This has a very attractive, fresh, red cherries and orange rind, as well as spiced chocolate and a very plush tannin feel. The palate is smooth and approachable with a very supple, red-fruit and gently sapid edge to the finish that bends to savory notes and stones. Drink or hold.

Very oxidative nose with honey, cream, butter and dried apricot. Interesting how well the balance has held up, despite low acid. Even so, this is for drinking not keeping. Almost orange in colour as if macerated. Soft, fluffy texture with a bit of white chocolate. Slightly flinty finish. (RH)

Similar to the sexy, open-knit and ready to go 2012, the 2011 St Joseph shows the sunny nature of the vintage with its awesome perfume of sweet black raspberries, incense, dried violets and wild herbs. Layered, ripe, medium to full-bodied and downright seamless, it's drinking brilliantly today but will keep for another decade.
