The 2001 Barbaresco Crichët Pajé signals the beginning of a new era at Roagna. It would take Luca Roagna time to fully realize his vision, but there is no question the 2001 is on another level compared to the 2000. The fruit is more evident and there are no awkward, distracting gamey notes or other flaws. Subsequent vintages would rise to greater heights, and yet seeing the inflection point for one of Piedmont’s top estates is so instructive, exactly what we aim to achieve at Vinous events.

The 2001 Barbaresco Crichet Pajé comes across as very young, but then again it was only bottled August 2010! Freshly cut flowers, licorice and mint are some of the notes that flow from this vibrant, perfumed Barbaresco. The 2001 fleshes out beautifully in the glass. It is a towering wine that can be enjoyed within the next few years, but ideally it is best left alone for as long as readers can be patient. This is a fabulous showing from Luca Roagna.

Anticipated maturity: 2014-2031. Luca Roagna released his 2001 Crichet Paje just last year, so it might seem odd to include it in this retrospective, but I never miss a chance to taste these wines. Roagna’s Baroli and Barbareschi remain some of the mos traditional, old school wines in Piemonte. Importer: Louis/Dressner Selections, New York, NY; tel. (212) 334-8191

The 2001 Barbaresco Crichët Pajé is one of the best wines I have ever tasted from Roagna. This massivel structured powerhouse flows from the glass with sensual layers of dark plum, cedar, cherries, dried roses, incense, tobacco and leather. The signature tertiary complexity that is such a large part of the Roagna house style is in full force, yet the wine preserves gorgeous inner perfume and freshness. This is a hypnotic, thrilling Barbaresco from Luca Roagna. In 2001 Roagna bottles just only his best barrels for this selection. There are only 1,200 bottles of the 2001 Crichët Pajé to go around. Readers lucky enough to find the wine will be treated to a thrilling drinking experience.
