Tasted at the Latour-à-Pomerol vertical in London. It is has been a decade since I last tasted the 1955 Château Latour-à-Pomerol. This one reaffirmed my affection for this vintage, even if it was not quite as glorious as ten years ago. It is drier on the nose than I recollect: red berries, damp earth and truffle, a cheeky touch of mint with time, although it has just lost some of its shine. The palate is medium-bodied and nicely structured, without the finesse or substance of the 1962 however, the acidity is perfectly judged and it gains more weight towards the finish. It is very typical of a Right Bank 1955: a little austere and correct, yet the focus and length is admirable. If you find any bottles, I would drink them sooner rather than later. The 1955 Latour-à-Pomerol is a wine I have tasted three or four times, a superb vintage that perhaps has begun its graceful decline in recent years. The bouquet offers red brambly fruit, damp loam and black truffle aromas with a discreet sprig of mint coming through with aeration. It has dispensed with some of its energy in recent years. The palate is medium-bodied and structured, albeit sans the finesse or substance of the 1962. Yet this has perfectly judged acidity and gains more weight toward the finish. It is very typical of a Right Bank 1955, a slightly austere and correct Pomerol with satisfying focus and length. This is understated yet undeniably a class act.
