This wine is beginning to crack up and decline. Considerable amber at the edge of its garnet color is followed by a wine with an attractive bouquet of underbrush, compost, licorice, and sweet currant fruit. In the mouth, the wine shows dry, astringent tannin and a lack of sweetness and depth. Aromatically it is impressive, but on the palate the wine is beginning to lose its fruit. The 1988 is a light to medium-bodied, perfumed and well-balanced wine that avoids the green tannins and astringence of many 1988's.
