Score 91-93/100 · Drink 2003-2010, Pierre Rovani, Feb 1998

Jadot's 1996 Criots-Batard-Montrachet, exhibiting smoky mineral scents, has superb mineral richness, powerful chalk flavors, and an extremely well-crafted and balanced character. It is silky-textured and medium-to-full-bodied, and is one of the finest examples I have tasted from this less-than-inspiring grand cru. Criots-Batard-Montrachet, located on the southern flank of Batard-Montrachet, has a shallow, rain-water collecting terroir. In the past, whenever I drove from Puligny-Montrachet to Chassagne-Montrachet, passing between the Montrachet and Batard-Montrachet vineyards, I always wondered how Criots-Batard-Montrachet could have been made a grand cru. During rain storms, its vines are inundated and soaked by run offs from its more highly-esteemed neighbors. In 1996, Criots profited from the drought-like summer conditions. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2010. Importer: Kobrand, Inc., New York, NY; (212) 490-9300.
