(this was the last 2011 to be bottled, in July of 2013): Good dark red. Reticent aromas of blackberry, menthol and earth. Then ripe, sweet and dense, with a creamier mouthfeel than the Chambolle and lovely spicy depth. The menthol quality returns on the firmly tannic, slightly dusty finish. Has serious spine for a 2011. Cecile Tremblay told me that 2011 was the most complicated harvest of the past four years, requiring a very careful triage .

The 2011 Vosne-Romanée Vieilles Vignes is incredibly tightly wound for a village level wine. Today it is the wine's structure and power that stand out most. There is unusual depth and pedigree in the glass. Hints of mocha, spice and new leather gradually flesh out on the generous yet wound up finish. There is serious tannin here, but also a lot to look forward to. With a few years of bottle age, this is usually a hugely overachieving Burgundy, and my expectation is that will be the case with the 2011 as well.

Nervy and lively with a hint of hazelnuts. Very juicy but not as rich and dense as the Chambolle. Needs a bit more time and more for lovers of structure. (JR)

Here there is no reduction which allows the spicy, cool and airy aromas of both red and dark berry fruit aromas to shine. There is good tension to the intense medium-bodied flavors that possess relatively refined, even sophisticated tannins that support the delicious yet quite serious, persistent and balanced finish. This is excellent for its level and recommended. Tasted: Jan 14, 2013. Drink: 2019+
